Vegacañada holds a celebration with its growers to inaugurate the agricultural campaign in its production centre in Alhama de Almería.

The Marketing Organisation Vegacañada, which belongs to Grupo Agroponiente, has met with the growers of the Alhama de Almería area to inaugurate the start of the agricultural campagn 2008/2009.

For the last three years Vegacañada has traditionally met with the growers of this area to officially initiate the agricultural campaign, in which the tomato stands out as the company’s star product. This is due to the fact that it is precisely in this area that the first tomatoes of the season are grown, covering production needs throughout the year.

In total, some 100 growers met from the Andarax area, accompanied by management staff from the Marketing Organisation headed by the General Manager of Vegacañada, Francisco López, as well as the Local Councillor for Agriculture of the Alhama Town Hall, Juan Cruz Rodríguez.

During the ceremony, the Agriculture Councillor pointed out the good work that the Marketing Organisation Vegacañada does in Alhama de Almería and appreciated the cooperation of the growers of the area, at the same time presenting a commemorative plaque to Francisco López Martínez, General Manager of Vegacañada as a sign of gratitude for the work carried out on fruit and vegetables by the Marketing Organisation.

For his part, The General Manager highlighted the great professionalism of the growers from Alhama, as “they have been able to, in the space of a few years, adapt to the times and pass from traditional crops, such as table grapes to being a reference in the growing of tomatoes all year round in greenhouses.”

It must be pointed out that the fruit and vegetable Marketing Organisation Vegacañada has a tomato production which increases its figures and improves its quality in each agricultural campaign. Likewise, melon and watermelon production is also experiencing a rise in sales figures.

Vegacañada, part of the Agroponiente Group of companies, came in to being in 2003 coinciding with the start of the agricultural campaign. From that moment, it has not ceased in its work of assuring the quality of its products. Its main work centre can be found in El Alquian, where the group has the first air-conditioned warehouse in the Almería province, with more than 23,000 square metres. Furthermore, a year ago the Marketing Organisation Vegacañada inaugurated its new facilities in the Alhama area of Almería, where they have a warehouse of 1,000 square metres dedicated to the production and harvest of tomatoes.

All of this bears witness to the cordial relations that exist between the Marketing Organisation and its growers, since without good cooperation the work carried out would not reach the level of quality that the marketed products present.

One of the objectives of Vegacañada is to work to secure a better service to the grower and, that way, improve and optimise costs in order to obtain an increase in its profitability. One must, however not forget that the priority for the Marketing Organisation Vegacañada is to assure optimum quality and correct food safety.
